AI Tools and Your Organization's Data

The Stewardship Problem

When you use AI tools for personal tasks, your data exposure is your own problem. When you use AI tools for work, the data exposure extends beyond you. You often work with data that belongs to your organization, your clients, or both. Your individual decision to use a particular AI tool can expose data that isn't yours to expose. This is the dimension most individual AI users never think about — not their own risk, but the risk they create for others.

If you work in an organization that handles any kind of sensitive information — client data, employee information, financial information, proprietary details — you have a stewardship obligation. This doesn't mean you can't use AI to assist your work. It means your choice of tools and your handling of data within those tools should be conscious.
